The body needs a continual supply of macronutrients and micronutrients to survive. Macronutrients are required in bulk quantity for energy, ie. carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. Micronutrients are trace substances required for normal metabolism, ie. vitamins and minerals. Virtually all nutrients enter the body in the form of food that has been broken down and processed by the digestive system. The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and accessory organs. The GI tract consists of the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Accessory organs include the pancreas, liver, and gallbladder.
