Stoichiometry

On the one hand you have real substances, and on the other hand you have the formulas employed in chemistry to represent these substances. Single, isolated, non-bonded atoms are rare in nature, with the exception of the noble gases. Substances generally exist in pure elemental form, whether in discrete molecules or in crystalline form, or in compounds, containing two or more elements in chemical combination in fixed proportions. Each type of chemical formula provides a limited picture of the nature of the substances they describe. While the molecular formula does reflect the chemical composition at the molecular level, the empirical formula shows only the simplest ratio in which atoms occur in the substance.
