Atomic Theory

Quantum numbers describe the series of solutions to the Schroedinger equation which corresponds to the series of possible atomic orbitals. Quantum numbers are analogous to the integer series denoting the series of possible standing waves on a fixed string. While only one number specifies a particular wave form or harmonic on a fixed string, three quantum numbers are required to specify an electron orbital. An electron orbital is a standing electron wave.
