The following hormones influence bone growth: growth hormone, somatomedin, calcitonin, and parathyroid hormone. Calcitonin and parathyroid hormone work in opposite directions to cause osteocytes either to break down or form spongy bone. The interaction of calcitonin and parathyroid hormone is the primary means of controlling blood calcium levels.
