Enzyme activity can be regulated at the level of the enzyme itself through various mechanisms (competitive or allosteric inhibition, proteolytic activation, etc.). Enzyme activity can also be regulated at the level of gene expression. There are many control points for the regulation of gene expression from mRNA synthesis to modification of enzymes in post-translational processing.
