For readers preparing for the MCAT, remember that detailed factual knowledge of biochemical pathways is not a prerequisite. While it definitely is excellent preparation to practice becoming comfortable reading this level of material, such a passage on the MCAT would only expect prior knowledge of fundamental principles. It would be a reading comprehension exercise basically, so don't take a month out of your study time to memorize everything unless you feel like it (wait until Med School!).
