As electrons move different bonding environment in oxidative metabolism the free energy decreases are coupled to eventual ATP synthesis. The free energy change corresponding to NADH generation by the oxidation of α-ketoglutarate in the citric acid cycle can be computed from the difference in the reduction potentials of α-ketoglutarate and NAD+ and converting to free energy change.
