|E2 elimination exhibits second order kinetics, first order in alkyl halide and first order in base. If the concentration of base does not affect the reaction rate, the mechanism is not E2 elimination, but E1.|
The MCAT is fond of questions of stereoselectivity, which always go back to the mechanism. Remember that in order for the transition state to be stabilized by partial π bond formation, the H-C-C-X bonds must lie in the same plane in the transition state, either syn periplanar or anti periplanar with the anti conformation the more stable because bonds are not eclipsed in the anti periplanar conformation.
