Functional Groups in Organic Chemistry

Bioenergetics and Cellular Respiration

Examples of sulfur containing compounds in biochemistry include most proteins, because most proteins include the amino acids methionine or cysteine. Furthermore, Coenzyme A, central to metabolism, is a thiol (containing sulfhydryl group (-SH). Acetyl Coenzyme A is a thioester.) Like phosphorus containing compounds, sulfur containing compounds seem to be slightly more emphasized in the MCAT focus over the years than is typical for the standard undergraduate course, reflecting the greater emphasis of phosphorus and sulfur organic chemistry in the life science context compared to standard organic chemistry, which has many other educational constituencies to please such as straight chemistry and chemical engineering.

The WikiPremed MCAT Course is a free comprehensive course in the undergraduate level general sciences. Undergraduate level physics, chemistry, organic chemistry and biology are presented by this course as a unified whole within a spiraling curriculum.
