Compounds containing phosphorus play many critical rolls in biochemistry. While the organic chemistry of phosphorus containing compounds does not typically receive a great deal of focus in the year of undergraduate organic chemistry, if organic chemistry were only taught for life scientists, phosphorus compounds would receive a great deal more attention. A short list of examples of significant biological compounds with phosphorus would include both nucleic acids, in which nucleosides are connected by phosphate linkages, and phospholipids, the major component of biological membranes.
