Reactions of Carboxylic Acids and Derivatives

Take the opportunity at this stage in the MCAT course to review the reactions of carboxylic acids. We will cover carboxylic acids more carefully later in the chapter Reactions of Carboxylic Acids. Reactions of carboxylic acids and carboxylic acid derivatives include α-halogenation of carboxylic acids (Hell-Volhard-Zelinsky Reaction), decarboxylization of malonic acid and related compounds, acid halide formation, Fischer esterification, carboxylate anion in SN2 ester formation, hydrolysis of acid halides, aminolysis of acid halides, esterification of acid halides, esterification of acid anhydrides, saponification of esters, nitrile hydrolysis, nitrile reduction, Hofmann rearrangement.
