Reactions of Alcohols and Ethers

Carefully review the alchol and ether reactions at this stage of the course. This is a preview cycle to prepare your mind in the greater project of mastering the mechanisms that will extend throughout this MCAT course. Reactions of alcohols include dehydration, reaction with HX, reaction thionyl chloride, oxidation of alcohols, alkoxide ion formation, condensation reaction to form ethers, the Williamson ether synthesis and epoxide formation from halohydrins. Reactions of ethers include acid cleavage of ethers and epoxide ring opening.
