As we have mentioned before, vaporization is a good model process for investigating the interplay of enthalpy change, internal energy change and thermodynamic work in a chemical system. The process of vaporization involves heat flow into the system, internal energy increase with the separation of mutually attracting particles (overcoming intermolecular force) and the performance of thermodynamic work as the system expands. Enthalpy change results in both internal energy increase and volume increase. Vaporization is one of the simplest kinds of chemical transformation to think about to make sure you can apply the 1st law of thermodynamics in the context of chemistry.
