The Chemical Bond

Functional Groups in Organic Chemistry

Valence shell electron pair repulsion theory plays an important role in organic chemistry, in which stereochemical considerations are so important. For the MCAT, you definitely must securely understand which forms have a linear, trigonal planar, or tetrahedral geometry (including non-bonded electron pairs) among alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, the hydroxyl group, carbonyl, carboxyl, and amine. Almost every MCAT has a VSEPR dependent question, usually in the context of organic chemistry.

The WikiPremed MCAT Course is a free comprehensive course in the undergraduate level general sciences. Undergraduate level physics, chemistry, organic chemistry and biology are presented by this course as a unified whole within a spiraling curriculum.
